Harnessing
the democratic potential of email and the Internet in Zimbabwe
The Kubatana Trust of Zimbabwe, incorporating the NGO Network Alliance
Project (NNAP), aims to strengthen the use of email and Internet strategies
in Zimbabwean NGOs and civil society organisations. Kubatana makes
human rights and civic education information accessible from a centralised,
electronic source.
Our web site
archives over 13,500 documents about Zimbabwean civil society. We
have an electronic network of over 250 NGOs and CSOs. Each Kubatana
partner has what we call a “fact sheet” in our online
directory. Our project has given many NGOs an Internet presence
without them having to spend resources on a fully-fledged web site.
Our regular electronic activism
campaigns encourage Zimbabweans and other visitors to our web
site to mobilise, lobby and advocate. Being involved lessens one’s
feeling of despair while helping us to keep inspired.
As Joan Baez
said: Action is the antidote to despair.
Our email
listserv and regular email
newsletters keep thousands of Zimbabweans and regional
and international subscribers informed. Kubatana also helps Zimbabwean
civil society to strengthen their use of Information Communication
Technologies (ICTs) through email, Internet
and motivational training workshops. We often spend
a day with a group of information activists teaching them how to
use ICTs more effectively either in their organisations, or as individual
activists.
By focusing
solely on Zimbabwe and being committed to the regular updating and
development of the portal, we believe that www.kubatana.net
will become the most important source of Zimbabwean human rights
and development information on the internet.
Who
we are
Although
we achieve a great deal Kubatana isn’t a very big organisation.
Brenda Burrell and Bev Clark are the founders/visionaries of the
project combining IT skills with marketing and creative talents.
Amanda Atwood keeps the project on course and inspired. Natasha
Msonza keeps the webpages ticking and the information flowing to
a range of loyal fans. Dennis Nyandoro is our front desk man, and
brews the best coffee in Harare.
